One Kid + One Miscalculated Leap From Playground Apparatus + One Belly Flop on Crushed Rock = One Distressed Mommy
Or something like that.
This past week I started lunchroom supervision duties at my kids' elementary school. (and I'm sure you'll hear all about that Awesomeness in a later post, do not dismay, dear reader) I report to the office each morning, go and do my spectacular job of keeping a lid on things and well... really that's all I do. Lay the smackdown. And then I go home.
Nice, hey?
Well, this morning as I rounded the corner to the main office, I spy my son's lil blond head through the office window. For a split second I wonder if he's gotten himself into a bit of trouble, but then I look closer and see he's doubled over in pain and is trying hard not to cry.
Apparently, when the bell rang to conclude the morning recess, he decided to be all Superkid and leap from the five foot tall floor of the playground apparatus. I'm sure it all looked grand and impressive in his head -- I know this cause I'm afflicted with the same Grandiose Thinking disease -- but the execution went all wrong and he ended up hitting the ground flat out and knocking the wind out of himself something fierce.
Which really isn't that big a deal. We've all had it happen before. But it shouldn't still be hurting over an hour later. At least... I didn't think so.
There were some logistical problems to overcome and, thankfully, Mr. F was able to burn over to the school and take the Kid to the hospital while I took care of my lunch shift. We met up at the hospital and after seeing the long line that was going nowhere fast; made the decision to try our luck getting in with our G.P.
Luckily, things fell into place. Our G.P. checked him over thoroughly and assured us that the Kids' ribs were all fine and his spleen was no worse for wear. He was just gonna need some ice and rest.
Ice and rest and a serious Reality Check about jumping off of high stuff.

Good to hear he is okay. We'd hate to have to take his spleen out, stitch it back up, and stick it back in. :-) What a good momma you are. Not to mention a stellar lunchroom supervisor, no doubt.
Now I'm wondering if this will end up devolving into a discussion on health care systems of various countries... I'm glad this hasn't happened to us yet, as I'd be really hesitant to take my kid to the E.R. at all, lest I end up with a four-figure bill.
I suppose that's why Superman PJ's now come with warning labels to the effect that wearing them does not, repeat, does NOT, render the wearer able to fly. . .
;)
Glad yer squiddo is OK.
And. . . resisting the temptation to go off on a rant about 'socialized medicine'. . . resisting. . . resisting. . .
FTN -- Seriously. That's just creepy how you knew what was going through my head with the whole Spleen In and Out thing. I have an Inner Granny who worries about such things when confronted with kids in pain. Of course, said worrying is not confined or in any way limited to The Spleen. My Inner Granny is very imaginative.
About the healthcare -- I welcome just such a discussion. Cause we really did leave the ER muttering under our breath about the state of healthcare in our country and wondering if we wouldn't be better off just straight up paying for stuff, cause then at least you'd get service when you need it. Or, I presume you would.
Des -- And that is exactly the reason why we have never bought Superman PJ's for the Kid.
I understand that the whole healthcare thing is a big Hot Button in the US right now. I guess there's positives and negatives to both sides.
Granted, we did get the care we needed in a pretty timely manner and at no cost to us (other than ridiculously high income taxes, that is), but that's cause our GP is a terrific guy who takes really good care of his patients and has an ultrasound in his office. He was happy enough to fit the Kid into his appointments. That's not always the case for other GPs and we could have easily been stuck sitting in the ER for 5 - 8 hours otherwise.
Glad The Kid is ok. My son did something similar in our front yard once and it really shook me up.
Do you have Labor Day weekend too or is it just US? Have a great weekend regardless!
